National Training Week (NTW 2024) & National Coaching Week (NCW 2024)

National Training Week (NTW 2024) and National Coaching Week (NCW 2024)

WOW! What a week it has been during the just concluded National Training Week (NTW 2024) and National Coaching Week (NCW 2024)!

It was a week to share, speak, coach and learn at the same time, during the week, filled with learning, training, and coaching opportunities for personal skills and knowledge development. Hope you took the opportunity to attend many of the free sessions given by many of our industry peers and colleagues.

During many of the sessions by the HR Leaders Circle, we had the chance to join and discovered a common theme shared, the importance of Psychological Safety in the Workplace. This got us thinking about the work by Amy Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School. Jonathan Low had the privilege to meet and discuss with her in London during the Thinkers50 Conference, where Amy was recognized as the Most Influential Management Thinker in the World in 2023.

With that in mind, let us share a bit about the work and research by Amy, from her book “The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth”. This is where Amy emphasizes the critical importance of creating a psychologically safe workplace where employees feel empowered to take risks, share ideas, and admit mistakes without fear of negative consequences.

Having this environment will foster learning, innovation, and improved team performance by promoting open communication, mutual respect, and continuous improvement. As leaders, you play a crucial role in cultivating this culture, ultimately driving organizational success and employee well-being.

Here are some questions for you to reflect, in building a workplace culture where psychological safety can be practiced:

  1. How do you think sharing your own vulnerabilities impacts your team’s trust in you?
  2. What methods do you use to encourage team members to share their ideas and opinions?
  3. How do you ensure that all team members feel comfortable participating in discussions?
  4. How do you identify and acknowledge behaviors that promote psychological safety within your team?
  5. What steps do you take to ensure that all feedback, even if negative, is addressed constructively?
  6. How do you balance the need for psychological safety with maintaining accountability and high performance?

Does your organization already practice having Psychological Safety in the Workplace that promotes Learning, Innovation, and Growth? What are the best practices you can share?
